SIX SACKS OF PORTUGUESE SOIL
[This is an extract, roughly translated, from a series of articles in Portuguese about Macau during the Second World War, written probably in early 1980s by Padre Manuel Teixeira.]
During the Pacific War (1941-1945) Romualdo Maria de Sousa, former commissioner of the steamboat "Tai-Shan" was among the thousands of refugees who came here. His family lived in Hohg Kong where his ancestors had emigrated in search of a livelihood. With the japanese takeover of this colony, 3000 of our compatriots returned to their ancestral home.
Romualdo de Sousa [#9845] was proud of his family's patriotism. His parents were Eusébio Florentino de Sousa [#] and Eufrónia Maria de Sousa [#]. Life in a foreign land, where trade provided reasonable income, had not made them forget their beloved Macau. On the contrary: their patriotism increased more and more.
Today, some pregnant women go to Hong Kong to give birth. But Eusebio Florentino de Sousa, living in Hong Kong, wanted all his children to be born on Portuguese land. So, when his wife Eufrónia was in her last month of pregnancy, he was planning to send her to Macau to give birth in their forebears.
Now it happened that one day things got complicated and she found herself suddenly in labour. Eusebius Florentino, without saying a word, left his wife, hurried to Macau, filled six large sacks of earth, entered the house and spreads the soil through the pregnancy room, covering his wife with the national flag.
"Have you gone mad, dear husband?" his wife wondered when she saw him move all the furniture and spread the soil without saying a word.
"My dear, the child must be born on Portuguese land and this is soil from Macau, you see?"
