On Sunday afternoon, the 24th February, the Hongkong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Co.'s steamer Yotsai, while on her passage from Hongkong to Macao, to resume her place on the line between the latter port and Canton, after undergoing repairs, was blown to pieces by the explosion of her boiler. The vessel was about fifteen miles from Hongkong, and the Captain and ten passengers were seated at tiffin, when the explosion took place, thc saloon being torn out and its occupants hurled into the air. Five of them were kllled outright, and Mr. da Costa, tbe Secretary of the Steamboat Co., sustained mortal injuries, dying on his passage back in one of two Chínese fishing junks wich picked up the survivors, Thc chief engineer of the steamer, nine fíremen, two stewards, the compradore, and one sailor were also killed. The survivors were all fearfully shaken, several of them severely cut and bruised, and all suffered much from the immersion and subsequent exposure to the cold ( ... ) The death of Mr. P. A. da Costa has been received with widespread and profound regret. Conscientious, hardworking, devoted to his work, to which he brought excellent capabilities, Mr. da Costa was invaluable to the Company, whose interests he served so faithfully and well. He was also exceedingly popular among his cornmunity, his amiable character and courteous manners endearing him to all wbo knew him.
