His many friends and acquaintances in the Colony will receive with great regret news of the death of a very old resident of the Colony in the person of Mr. C. M. Castro, for 48 years on the staff of Messrs. Lane Crawford Ltd.
The late Mr. Castro, who resided in Kowloon, had been in failing health for the past 3 months and gradually getting worse was removed to the Government Civil Hospital on Saturday morning. He passed away shortly before midnight on Tuesday.
Mr. Castro, who was born in Hongkong 65 years ago and lived here all the time, was educated at the old Government Central School, now Queen's College. When quite a young man he entered the firm of Messrs. Lane, Crawford Ltd., and has been a faithful and conscientious employee ever since. A linguist of no mean ability, he was able to speak no less than twelve Chinese dialect, the Filipino dialectS, English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Hindustani, Malay and German. Be was well known and respected throughout the Colony.
During the war, the late Mr. Castro was Crown Sergeant in charge of the Armoury of the Hongkong Police Reserve and when the force was disbanded received a testimonial acknowledging his loyal and exemplary service.
Mr. Castro brought up a very large family of ten sons and five daughters, and about sixty grand children. Eight of the sons and two daughters are still alive and the sympathy of all their friends will go out to them in their bereavement. Mrs. Castro pre-deceased her husband many years ago.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at the Roman Catholic Cemetery at Happy Valley amid many manifestations of regret and sympathy. The Rev. Father Rossi officiated.
The chief mourners were the late Mr. Castro's 7 sons, Richard, Henry, Tony, Egydio, Alfred, David, Teddy and 2 daughters, Mrs. O'Brien and Mrs. Franco. A son in the Philippines, Mr. J. Castro, was unable to attend.
There was a very large attendance of the general public and the grave was covered with a wealth of floral tributes.3
