He arrived in Macau before 1704. He made a great fortune in commerce and established himself as one of the most powerful and influential merchants of his time. He was renowned in Macau for his wealth and for the hatred he bore for his enemies. So influential was he that he succeeded, in intrigues with the Viceroy of India, in replacing the Governor of Macau, Teles de Menezes, who was imprisoned and sent to Goa as a delinquent.
Some 30 years after his arrival in Macau, married but without hope of having children, he considered returning to Portugal. But the governor, superiors of the religious orders, members of the Senate, and other influential citizens asked him to stay. The resolution of this assembly was corroborated by the Viceroy of India who, in the letter of 11 January 1725, expressed the desire of seeing him continuing his work in Macau, expecting much from his dynamic activity.
Confined to bed, he sent for his nephew Simão Vicente Rosa from Portugal, for whom he arranged a wife and left him all his goods.3

Manuel Vicente Rosa left a legacy of 1,000 taels (about 40 kg) of silver to poor orphans to allow them to marry. However, Simão Vicente Rosa, refused to pay this and the Bishop of Macau, D. Alexandre da Silva Pedrosa Guimarães, had to appeal to Goa.
When the Jesuits were expelled from Macau in 1762, they owed more than 6,147 taels to Simão Vicente Rosa. In 1765 he accepted lha Verde (Green Island, which was owned by the Jesuits) for this amount, and on 14 April 1766 the Governor of Goa ordered the Macau Senate to hand the island to Simão Vicente Rosa.1 - Marriage*: Maria de Araújo e Barros, daughter of Francisco de Araújo e Barros and Clara de Mendonça Furtado.
