He founded the commercial printing firm Tipografia Mercantil N.T. Fernandes. This was the only Portuguese establishment that submitted and gained approval for its works of graphic arts in the International Specimen Exchange of the USA in 1887. Then after his death this printing press won the following prizes for the excellence of its works: Honorary Mention in the Universal Exposition in Paris of 1900, Gold Medal in the Industrial Exposition of Macau of 1926 and Diploma of Honour in the International Colonial Exposition in Paris in 1931.4
