  Enrique Ma. Barreto is truly a very interesting fellow. Aside from being the founder of San Miguel Brewery and the Oriental Brewery (the former has outlived the latter), he had one of the most advanced photography studios in the Orient, he built the first Ice plant in Asia. He had a chalet where European royalty were his frequent guests. The house was built right beside the palace of the Viceroy or Governor General of the Philippines (see photo)
  
  In 1875, he was appointed representative of His Majesty, the King of Italy. He was Counsellor of the Treasury of the Philippines and even Assistant Mayor of San Miguel, Manila from 1896 to 1898.Being a polyglot, he was also chief counsel and interpreter for the Americans when the Philippines was under them.
  
  Enrique actually lived a princely life and being dark-skinned gained the monicker "Black Prince". My grandfather used to tell me that Enrique would usually live his house in full regalia. He was usually in the society pages of newspapers and he was really leaving a good life. He was a member of several distinguished clubs in Europe.
