Merchant and ships' captain in Macau, where it appears that he began his life with money that Miguel Antonio de Sousa gave or lent. He was known as João Brilhante, a nickname derived from the name of the boat that he owned. Once successful in business, João António Alves ordered a splendid dinner service of export quality porcelain (known in Europe as the "Company of the Indies"), to offer to the said Miguel Antonio de Sousa, in gratitude - in the center of each piece is painted a sailing boat, with initials "MAS" in golden letters on a flag, in allusion to the fact that his benefactor was a Navy official. This service was passed on to the family, where there are still a few pieces today. The largest accumulation of pieces, in the hands of his granddaughter Angela Romana, was sold to an American collector who visited Hong Kong, with some of these specimens displayed in the "Helena Woolworth McCann China Trade Porcelain Collection" at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and others in "The Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum" in Winterthur, Delaware, USA.1

She inherited the remainder of the family dinner service, which she sold in the late 1920s to an American collector, after offering a piece to each of the branches of the family. As a result of this act there still exist copies of this beautiful service, because if she had kept them they would have been stolen or destroyed when her house was robbed by Chinese bandits during the two days of interregnum between the departure of the British and the entrance of the Japanese occupation troops.3
